The head of the Decorative Stones Association said: “If the infrastructure is ready, the Islamic Republic of Iran has the potential to gain a 10 percent share of the global decorative stone trade by 2030.”

According to Mine News, Bahram Shakouri added: Currently, the annual trade in decorative stones in the world is about $30 billion, which is expected to reach $54 billion by 2030.

He said: The Chinese have a $5.3 billion share of the global market for these products, and Iran is also capable of exporting the same amount, provided that we can approach the global standard of extraction from reserves, which is about 2 percent.

This trade union official noted: Currently, the average extraction from decorative stone reserves in the country is half a percent, and if we approach this global standard, achieving $5 billion in exports and creating jobs for about one million people in this field is not far off.

Achieving a 10 percent share of the global decorative stone market is achievable

He emphasized: Defining mega-projects for processing decorative stones, supplying machinery and equipment, activating dormant mines, and standard production are needed to achieve this goal.

Shakuri continued: In this connection, we are forced to provide the necessary basic infrastructure, such as the development of ports and rail and road infrastructure, and establish appropriate political and economic relations with other countries, including issues such as the ease of issuing visas for traders, merchants, and economic activists, especially with friendly and target countries.

Increased transportation costs

He pointed out, for example, the increase in maritime transportation costs in recent years, which in some cases had increased by up to $25,000 per container, and said: At the same time, the Turkish government supported its country’s traders and economic activists by accepting additional costs in this regard in order to maintain its markets; while at the same time, we were witnessing a decrease in our country’s exports for the same reason.

Shakuri, referring to the good experience of Iranian companies attending the Xiamen Stone Exhibition in China, added: This exhibition, along with the Izmir Exhibition in Turkey and the Verona Exhibition in Italy, is one of the major exhibitions in this industrial and mining field that was held last month.

“Iran is among the top 4 countries of the world in the reservoir and production of decorative stones,” said Kavous Ghasemi, General Director of Mines Bureau of Iran’s Ministry of Industry, Mine and Trade, on Wednesday in Ardabil.

The official asserted that Iran has noticeable reserves of mineral resources which have not been discovered and tapped yet. Ghasemi recounted that 50 new mineral material have been discovered in Iran and highlighted that the biggest part of Iran’s mineral needs are met with domestic production and there is no need for importing any raw mineral stone.

The official noted that mineral production has grown 5 percent in the last Iranian year in comparison with the year of 1394.

He also added that out of 9000 registered mines in Iran, 5700 are actively being tapped.

“Foreign investors are exploring Iran’s Eastern Azerbaijan Province in search for gold and copper while a gold mine in Kurdistan Province has been recently put into tapping,” said Kavous Ghasemi.

Final words

He stated that the presence of Iranian companies during this period was scattered, and continued:

“On the other hand, we witnessed the strong presence of foreign companies, especially Chinese and Turkish ones, which made a powerful presence in the form of setting up pavilions.”
